How to Use KN95 FFP2 Protective Respirator Mask
The 5 Layer mask is simple to use and provides effective protection. Always check that the mask is in good condition before use- ensure there is no dirt or damage to any part of the mask.
Hold the mask in your hand with the nose piece at your fingertips. Press the mask firmly against your face with the nose piece on the bridge, stretch the ear loops around the ears.
Using both hands, mould the metal nose piece to the shape of your nose. Cup both hands over the respirator, being careful not to disturb the position. Inhale vigorously – if air leaks around the edges, reposition the straps for a better fit.
How long does a FFP2 mask last? FFP2 masks can be marked with the letter (R) for ‘reusable’ or (NR) for ‘non-reusable’. Most FFP2 masks fall into the latter category – they are protective devices that progressively become less effective with the passing of time. For this reason, an FFP2 mask typically lasts around eight hours in at-risk environments, or a single work shift. Even if it is worn while keeping a safe distance in low-risk areas, the mask should nevertheless be thrown away after eight hours, since breathing and exposure to moisture gradually affect its filtration capacity and physical integrity. Once they become significantly damp, FFP2 masks should be binned.
FFP2, N95 and KN95 masks can be produced with or without a valve. But what difference does it make? Put simply, masks with a valve are safe for the wearer, but not for those around them. The valve filters the incoming flow of air but not the outgoing air, meaning masks with a valve should NOT be worn by people who have, or may have, COVID-19 – instead these people should choose masks without a valve, which filter both the inhaled and exhaled air: surgical masks or KN95, FFP2 or N95 masks with no valve.
The main downside of FFP2, N95 and KN95 masks is the fact that they are disposable – after a single eight-hour period of use they lose their filtration and protective ability and must be thrown away. The shortage of masks during the first crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for procedures, at least temporary, to extend their lifespan by reprocessing.
Legally, the re-use of an approved single-use protection or surgical mask, other than for personal use, is similar to the launch of a new product. It would only be possible in the case of serious shortage of protective equipment. An employer who wishes to recycle and redistribute FFP masks or equivalent to his employees will therefore only be able to do so (outside of a shortage situation) once it has been demonstrated that the masks, after decontamination, still have performances corresponding to their certification..
For FFP masks, as well as for surgical masks (used in healthcare environments), reprocessing must absolutely be carried out using protocols that have demonstrated their effectiveness in terms of decontamination without damaging the masks or reducing their efficacy (protection against aerosols in particular). For FFP masks, a few decontamination methods have been validated or are in the process of being validated. The re-use of medical masks (outside healthcare environments) has the same legal constraints as the recycling of FFP mask or equivalent. Since surgical masks do not have any requirements in terms of aerosol penetration, it is likely that a number of decontamination or sterilisation procedures can be used. However, these procedures have yet to be demonstrated. .
Community type masks should be cleaned and recycled according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. As a general rule, machine washing with a regular detergent and at 60°C is sufficient. The number of cleaning cycles may vary depending on the material (at least 5 cycles for a community mask following the recommnadations of the Task Force ). In any case, the mask should be discarded if it is deformed or if the attachments are damaged (poor fit to the face).
FFPs are technically designated as single-use, or 'non-reusable' products (this is what the NR on the packet denotes). But evidence is mounting to support the view that FFP masks can be reworn, as they may remain effective for longer periods of time. This would greatly reduce the waste created by these products and help make them more accessible.
The idea that disposable masks should be thrown out after eight hours of use doesn't necessarily make sense in the context of everyday protective use by the public. FFP2/N95 type masks were originally designed for healthcare and industrial workers who are exposed to high levels of hazardous particles over the course of a shift - but that this doesn't mirror everyday use by the public during Covid. While it's still important to bear hygiene in mind with your mask, there is scope for reuse.
Mask manufacturer 3M recently issued advice for the public saying that respirators can be worn until they are dirty, damaged or difficult to breathe through. It suggests having a few masks on rotation, rather than simply reusing the same mask over and over. This allows you to air them out in between uses. That masks should be left somewhere clean and dry to air for a few days in between uses, which should mean that any viral particles attached to the mask become less of a risk over time.
